Day 1 - Phuket's Western Beaches

D

iscover the Pearl of the South's beaches

Phuket's undisturbed white-sanded horizon-to-horizon West coast beaches are still apparently undiscovered by the tourist masses that throng to the Island!   But see these empty beaches now before the Di Caprio mob move in!   The small cafes and restaurants along the beaches just got electricity and it won't be long before the developers move in, spreading those ubiquitous condos and high-rise hotels to crowd out the skyline, repeating the folly of that previously dozy fishing village of Patong Beach.

Later take a relaxing scenic drive in our spacious, air-conditioned landrover on to Khao Lak. From your window you'll want to photograph the local dramas played out in the rustic streets of the sleepy rural villages. Admire the majestic agricultural farmland, paddy fields, and undeveloped virgin bush landscapes as we pass beyond and into the province of Khao Luk. Keep an eye out here for the profuse animal life in the Khao Lak environment. If you're lucky, you might spot deer, guar, wild elephants, Asiatic black bears, drongos, monkeys, or hornbills in this environmental paradise.

Meet the People
Pausing along the way, perhaps to take a take a drink or snack, buy fruit or photographic film, you'll be able to get up close and personal with these gentle superstitious people and perhaps learn something new about their unfamiliar culture, folklore, and traditions.

Refreshing Dip
We'll take a happy-break when we stop off to get wet and wild at the picturesque Lumpi Waterfalls in Lamru National Park. Then we'll drift on over to Khao Lak where you'll take lunch and a nap, stretched out at the deserted Robinson beach and doze for the afternoon on your relaxed family vacation.

Cloud Pass
In the late afternoon we'll venture on to negotiate the rising mists of the atmospheric "Cloud Pass" hiking anonymously and unannounced into Khao Sok National Park by the back door.

Tree Top Huts
Check-in to our traditional accommodation of the charismatic "Tree Top Huts" next to a bridge nestled in a bend on the river. Take your time to drift around, take a walkabout checking out the neighborhood with a relaxing stroll along the verdant riverbank before dinner. See how many photographs of the 175 bird species you can take!

Day 2 - Khao Sok Elephant Hiking - Phang-Nga

Elephants Call!
Take breakfast in the fresh morning air. Eat well, for we're off on a morning elephant safari trek, hiking through eco adventure tours on elephantsthe cool dark rainforests of Khao Sok National Park environment. We'll visit the waterfalls and pause awhile for a splashing good time in the cool pools of solid stone. Then back to the topic of food for lunch on the riverbank.

Buddhist Temple
A visit to Thailand isn't complete without exploring a few Buddhist temples and you won't be disapointed. Despite not being on the well-worn tourist trail, these temples are nonetheless charismatic chambers of intrigue and folklore that provide a haven for meditatation and enlightenment to the ordinary Thai person.

Bamboo Rafting
Later, depending on the water level, we may make a short bamboo rafting expedition to check out the stone grotto and the other hidden mysteries that lay beyond the next river bend. We'll certainly find all types of birds, vegetation, flowers, and fruits. And if we don't make too much noise, we may even discover some of the less gregarious riverbank inhabitants of this picturesque water highway.

Day 3 - Khao Sok National Park Canoeing Adventure

Thailand's pristine Khao Sok National Park abounds with exciting wildlife encounters: the sights and sounds of macaque monkeys bathing... the melodic chattering calls of vivid technicolor hornbill parrots preening. The pervasive smells of tropical floral blossom bouquets... strange exotic fruits... aromatic trees and roots.  A dreamy canoeing paradise, hiking deep into the mysterious misty jungle rainforests of legendary Khao Sok.

family vacation picturesRiver Roaming
Ask your canoeing boatman to linger for a brief respite, by the shaded mangrove riverbanks of these hidden estuaries.

Ask gently, and he'll retrieve the delicate, unfamiliar fruits from the rainforest canopy, and chuckle at your awkward peeling discovery of your sensory ripe delight. Canoeing heaven...

Panoramic Vistas
The soaring limestone escarpment karsts, ancient skeletons of long-gone tropical coral reefs, lean precariously at gravity-defying angles not normally witnessed on planet earth.  Towering ominously above the welcome refresh of the cool waterfalls, they provide shade and shelter, a sanctuary against the tropical monsoon climate.

Unspoilt Neighborhood
The Khao Sok National Parkland nestles commodiously amongst an environmental backdrop of picturesque hazy valleys cultivated by friendly rural farmers, punctuated by the enigmatic Budhist Temples of this sleepy backwater of Southern Thailand. But please!  Don't tell ALL your friends!

Elephant Rock n' Roll
Take a leisurely stroll upon the back of a rocking Indian elephant, lurching and rolling like a crazy drunken fairground ride, pluck ripe rambutan as you pass beneath the boughs. But hang on tight as these majestic old gentlemen of the forests negotiate the slippery, rock-strewn streams, hiking impatiently onward towards the refreshing waterfall pool for lunch, urged on impatiently by their mysterious mahouts.

Be Prepared!
You'll not want to forget a second of this profoundly impressive experience. So bring your diary, and be sure to pack plenty of film for photographs - but don't forget a plastic ziplock bag to keep it dry when the canoeing wet fun starts! You'll not need any bug spray though, for hiking at the altitude of 800 meters (2,500 feet) and fresh marine breezes keep those pesky critters at bay.

Rocky Bath Time
The waterfall grotto suddenly appears as the stream widens into a series of shallow pools in the stream's time-eroded bedrock. A chance to pause and stretch out on the banks. Take the plunge in a light-hearted water frolic and frame photographs of your companions in the dark mineral pools beneath the gentle waterfall showers.

'Home, James!'
Time to relax and reflect on your days of discovery as we take a leisurely return trip back to Phuket Island on the surprisingly well-maintained highway environment, tirelessly winding our way through the bizarre landscape of Phang Nga Bay, better known for the famous James Bond Island.  Back in the cocoon of your hotel room, you'll sleep well on the night of your return, perhaps re-living your day's adventurous exploits of discovery in the enigmatic Khao Sok National Park. Either way, you'll still have the photographs to prove that it wasn't just a dream!
